lake michigan Portage area

Lived around here my whole life and have always been afraid of fishing these areas for a multitude of reasons but was brought out with a friend and we went out of portage and I really enjoyed both the little calumet and some of the big lake. As I look at google earth and watch videos it looks like Buffington harbor/Portage/Gary and then the mouth of the calumet seem to be the most areas people concentrate on as it seems everything else is sand. Can anyone give any tips or recomendations on what to look for and where to start as most of it looks the same. Anything to avoid beside the obvious wind and waves? I caught no smallmouth on Sunday but did catch a 30plus inch brown trout, also a bunch of small largemouth in the little calumet. Not looking for secret spots here just a general what to look for and what to avoid.

I can’t give any info, cause I live 2.5 hrs south.
