    Hosting tournament

I've got assigned to organize a bass tournament for one of my jobs community service events next spring and trying to figure out the best way to get the most people entered. Does having guaranteed money (3 places) or pay per so many places get more people out to fish? Please vote.

    Thanks

I’d say pay so many places. We always did top 30% get paid, last paying place got slightly more than their entry fee back.

Ex. Our entry fee was $50. If we had 10 boats, there was $500 to be divided amongst the top 3. 60% for first (300), 25% for second (125), 15% for third (75).

Now we paid back 100% entry fees. If it’s a community event, then they probably want some to keep so you’ll need to figure out how much they intend to profit, how much it’s going to cost to set up the event (if it’s not 100% volunteered effort), then divide the winnings based on the percentage left. For community events, we assumed 75-80% payback was reasonable.

Check out the Casting and Catching for kids annual tournament that raises money for kids with heart defects. The money is in getting sponsors to donate. That way you can pay a lot of places. Notice all the sponsors and how much prize money they give out. They also limit the tournament to two hundred boats. It’s the most fun charity tournament I have every fished and I will continue to until I am no longer able.

1/3 for the government, 1/3 for yourself, and the rest for the anglers, seems fair.

The best regular weekly tournaments that have ever been around here were a place for every 7 boats & they always drew a good amount of boats. Now the local booster club hosts them & it's only 3 places & they're not nearly as good of tournaments.

Don't forget a big bass jackpot for $5 or $10 bucks to enter.
