    hydraulic steering fluid

I need to refill and purge my sea star system. I don't feel like paying $30 for a quart of their hydraulic steering fluid. What are you all using?

I’ll tell you what I use and it’s not to start a pi$$in match. We’ve beat this horse to death in the past, but I use Dexron VI. It’s viscosity and compatibility is very similar to the SeaStar fluid and other high dollar fluids. Everyone will have their pick and that’s their choice. I’ve been using it for years with no fail and ease of use in even the coldest temps.

Yup, Dexron VI ATF in mine when I redid the seals. Not a problem.

If you are going to change the type of fluid, it should be drained/cleared and refilled. You could be fine, or you could have some amount of incompatibility. Up to you. But $30 doesn't seem like much, when you will be reclaiming it when purging and can store it away.

If you decide to go cheap, go real cheap, like SuperTech from Walmart or whatever brand Dollar Tree has.
Hang on. I'll help you in 77 minutes.

    I think I paid $60 Cdn.
Been trouble free for a few years now. Small price to pay for me and ya this has been beaten to death on a lot of threads.

Can't get into specifics ... but the correct product is AeroShell Fluid 41 or an equivalent like Philips 66 X/C Hydraulic Fluid, noted above by another poster. Order it online from the source you prefer OR head to the local FBO (Flight Based Operations center) at the nearest airport. 95% of the time, they'll stock a mix of aviation engine oils, greases and, at least, one of the hydraulic fluids needed.

Yeah $30 for 1 quart is price gouging imo. If there is another alternative I'll go that route.

When I bought my Skeeter, in 08, it was bleeding red ATF. Had it repaired & have used ATF ever since.

Aviation hydraulic fluid is dyed red, helps to indicate leaks on aircraft.
Unless someone had serviced it with ATF, it was aviation hydraulic.

Yes, sir, you are correct. As a naval aviation airframe mechanic, from the pass, I remember that. But I'll still use ATF.

Seastar, and aviation hydraulic fluid, are mineral based petroleum lubricants, ultra clean, super light viscosity.
DEXRON VI is a synthetic petroleum lubricant, light viscosity. They are different chemistry, not the same fluid.
In my professional opinion, the correct product is aviation hydraulic fluid, MIL-PRF-5606J or MIL-PRF-5606H.

Correct, that's a different bird ... Group V ester, nasty stuff, eats skin and seals.
Recommend AeroShell Fluid 41, Philips X/C Hydraulic Fluid or Mobil Aero HF.
