Tattoo Question for those that have one..

What are you paying an hour to get one?

Do you tip on top of your payment?

The two I have spoken to recently are between $150 to $180 an hour in my area. Just seems like a large amount and then tip on top of that?

Some don't like them. I get it.
I'm asking a simple question to those that do get them.

    Thanks.

You get what you pay for. If you want something done well then research your local artists and if they are more than others, then there is a reason for it. They do quality work.

I agree. You get what you pay for. I’ve gone cheap and gone expensive, neither were bad but you can tell the difference by far.

Pat, my frog tattoo was $150 and took roughly an hour. My skull was a Halloween special for $30.

Tattoo removal is extremely painful and takes many many sessions. I started to have one removed and after three sessions (10-12 more to go) I said screw this and just has the area tattooed over with a larger coverup.

I don't tip jobs that don't traditionally receive tips. It they rely on tips for "income" then raise your prices.

Then charge and pay for the quality work. Don't make the next job depend on some obscure tip.

Nah, those take too long. Skinning knife, you’re done in 5 minutes, in a couple months you have a fresh canvas.

Always do lots of research and look at examples. If there was ever a definition of you get what you pay for it is body ink. I tip like a server gets i.e. 20%.

I paid for the tattoo itself and not by the hour.

If you rob a bank you can get one for a few packages Ramen noodles. I’ve seen some pretty good jailhouse tats!

If I’m paying someone $150+ per hour (for pretty much anything) I really don’t think I would feel obligated to tip them.

I have several all from same artist. My suggestion is don’t look at price, shop around for someone who’s art you like and you feel comfortable with. I also do tip, it’s pretty customary in most shops.
