    Phillips head screw drivrrs

I have an unacceptable rate of marring screw heads when using phillips head screw drivers or powered drivers. What's the trick to getting a proper fit ?

Use the proper size phillips for the screw. Also not all phillips drivers are equal. Cheap drivers are too steep of an angle with weak metals.

Phillips screw drivers have different sizes. Get a quality bit or driver. If the one you are using now is all chewed up, don't waste your time using it. It will only make life frustrating.

I bought some Felo (German through Bondhus) screw drivers a few years ago. Best ones I have ever used. Loved them so much I give them as Christmas gifts to friends and family.

Be sure of the screw type, Pozi-Drive looks the same as a Phillips but takes a different tool to prevent problems. To help with a stripped screw head try a dab of valve lap compound or coarse rubbing compound on the tip.

Phillips head stuff should become obsolete. Ever since China started making everything they’ve become total garbage.

Also very important is to slow the speed of the drill down while using a slow speed and heavy pressure.

For screwdrivers, wiha. Thats what I use at work. A screwdriver is not just a screwdriver...they are really not that expensive either.

Sounds like I need to do some shopping. My screw drivers are probably junk.

If you have to use a drill, bump the trigger to allow it to stop so your tip can reseat frequently. And you can also apply more forward pressure in bursts as you are advancing the screw. Better yet, use an impact driver. They do a much better job of keeping the driver well seated. They basically do the same thing outlined about but several times a second. You can also use some spit or other lubricant on the screw. It will make driving it in easier.
