Who do you insure your boat through?

Sold my boat a few months ago and getting another here in a few weeks. I had my boat insured through farm bureau, but I never felt real confident in what exactly was insured. Now that I have well over a few thousand just in rods/reels...thought I might get a little better handle on insurance. Can you guys share any advice on insurance and what I should look for? Thank you for your thoughts

    Boaters Insurance Agency Inc.
They are a broker and will select the best fit for you and they specialize in Bass Boats.
I've had good luck with them.

Definitely talk to Ben Green. Because I have an older 2008 Bass Cat, his agency can't write policies for older boats BUT that didn't stop Ben from giving me a lot of advice on what to look for and different carriers to contact directly. He even reviewed some quotes I got and had me change a few things. I wasn't even a customer of his but he was willing to help me out and help me get fully insured. If I ever purchase a newer boat, I'm calling Ben Green right away.

Markell. This is the company Shaw Grigsby used to promote. Went direct since no agent near me at the time. Have had it on last 2 boats . 1 claim on lower unit impact that was handled to my complete satisfaction by communication & emailing pictures/ quotes to claims specialist. Have replacement value coverage on current boat & had agreed value coverage on previous boat after Progressive raised my replacement coverage 45% after 1 year on previous boat with no claims & no traffic tickets , so i dropped them . And no, I'm not a Progressive fan because of that & 2 other claims not my fault that I had to endure from other people having Progressive . Overall happy with Markell & I've had way too many less than pleasant dealings with several other companies over the years. Rates have went up over the years, but so have boat/equipment values. Research them & get a quote & decide for yourself .

Travelers, who also has my home, personal items, and autos. It may not be the cheapest, but it is one of the companies allowed for required payroll deduction for auto insurance payments when I lease cars through my employer.

When you get coverage, boat & motor is one dollar amount you request; trailer is another amount and personal property, electronics. TM, rods, reels and gear is another amount of your choosing. Good idea to take inventory and or pics, it will be up to you to provide info in case of loss, (not a blank check for the full amount of pp).Liability amount you pick. (The difference between 100k & 500k is about $25/year; pick the higher). Underwriting reviews; if you asked for $80k on a boat/motor worth $50k they should pick up on that “agreed amount” disparity. Tow etc may be included or optional. As are deductible you choose. In the end you have an insurance company. The broker is not the insurer, nor do they set the rates…sales, service & advice which has value is their end. Nowadays. People with older boats should look at increasing not decreasing coverage due to replacement cost/parts. I did that on my State Farm boat policy on the ‘09 boat I sold last week, (increased it a couple years back). UW just asked for an ad. for similar boat price and were fine with it.
