Might help to know the date. There are some archaic medical terms no longer used today... some that I might not recognize.

I suspect it is Parenchymatous Nephritis

Maybe that's it, although it's difficult to make out the middle section of the word Parenchymatous in that scribbling. 1934 is the DOD.

No. It's definitely what I said. It is legible and that term would have been used at that time.

He's probably doing some ancestry research.

Bright's Disease, Parenchymatous Nephritis, and more commonly used today, Nephrotic syndrome are classifications of renal disease. These can be acute or chronic, caused by a variety of conditions but most commonly hypertension, diabetes or infection. The disease is characterized by edema, albuminuria and shortness of breath.

If you are doing ancestry research, you might also see terms like dropsy, heart failure and apoplexy listed on the death certificate.

I asked about age, because it could be a sequela of strep pharyngitis in children, though it would be far more likely to see Scarlet Fever listed as the cause of death especially in the mid to late 1800s.

Just a M.D. that enjoys doing ancestry research - especially in Kentucky where my ancestors have been since the days of Daniel Boone.

My brother is an MD. I think they teach a course in med school about making your writing illegible.

My handwriting started out very nice but when I hit residency and then the ER, it rapidly deteriorated as I had to write complete SOAP notes (not only for proper documentation but also to cover my butt) while under the gun to quickly move patients. Nowadays, we have EMRs and while it's a love hate relationship, it sure is easier on the hand - and definitely easier to read.
