I thought the same while watching the video. You could tell they were in full reverse and the front was swinging the wrong way.

In the video you can see the crew trucks flashing lights just to the right of the center span.

im sure there will be a full maritime investigation but it appears to be a mechanical and or electrical failure.

Looking at the Instagram video the lights go out, then come back on and then you can see black smoke coming out the stack as if they were applying full power in reverse, lights go out again, come on and then impact. The interviews with the pilots will be telling. 100,000 tons of ship will have a lot of force upon impact.

That instagram video show everything a little better. Also from what I could tell, multiple cars got across just in time and it appeared to me that no cars were traveling on the span when it did collapse. There were however several vehicles (construction maybe) with flashing lights that were parked at the time that did fall in the river with the bridge.

They were doing bridge repairs, pouring concrete.

Maybe, just maybe give it a day or two to allow them to look more closely at what might have caused it. They are still in rescue mode. Expecting accurate answers minutes ad hours after tge incident might not be realistic.

Don't these ships have data recorders similar to aircraft black boxes ??

At the very least there's radar data and I'd bet there will be more videos come out from security cameras in the area.

No doubt! You can see the lights of the ship blinking on and off then staying off just the collision.

The anchor should have been dropped way before the collision,, It was nowhere near the channel for a long time.

That Instagram video clearly shows the ship lost power. Prayers for the missing and their families.

Hard to say any of that or to assess blame without knowing more.

Let's not forget, these ships do not turn or stop on a dime and if they did have some type of power and/or steering lose, they are in big trouble and at the mercy of momentum. It's a horrible accident and prayers to all and their families involved......

There is another video from a slightly different angle where you can see the ships approach and hit. I noticed all of the light on the ship went out twice before it hit the bridge. Possible complete power failure cause it?
