My experience has been the same regarding slowing down on the retrieve, especially fishing grass with chatterbaits, Senkos, swim jigs. Same with dragging a tube or fishing a blade bait. I lean towards a 6'10" or 7' max rod. I see so many guys on Great Lakes with 7'6" and longer rods, which I get as you can bomb cast your lure. I find I catch more fish using slower retrieves with most of my presentations. Especially in colder water like it is now.

When I fish a jig I mostly just let it fall and pick it up a time or two. Then next pitch.
