Depends on what part of the lake you're planning on staying at. Virginia side, NC side, etc. Buggs Island is a big lake.
Not a lot of options on the NC side, and I know guys never recommend staying in Henderson because of the crime. There's a couple hotels in Clarksville on the VA side near Occoneechee State Park, and we've stayed in the cabins there at the state park a few times and had a really good experience.
