9.0 - Potential NY State Record Smallmouth!!

Dante Piraino caught a 9# SMB at the NY Bass Nation event on the St. Lawrence this weekend! Here's what Scott at The Tackle Trap wrote about it on the Facebook/Instagram pages at links below for you guys who don't do FB/IG...

Just want to give my tournament partner @dantepiraino a huge shoutout for catching a 9 pound smallmouth yesterday in the New York bass nation event on the St Lawrence River. This would be the new York State record smallmouth. It is still up in the air if it will go into the books as he released the fish after it was weighed on a certified scale. The DEC wanted him to hold it and put it on for a day to get measurements on it but didn’t want to kill the fish. What would you guys do if you were in his shoes let us know? Either way there was tons of witnesses to see this beast of a fish. Official measurements were 23 1/2” long by 18 1/2” girth. Couldn’t be any more proud of Dante breaking the New York State fed record with a 31.40 pound bag of smallmouth.

    WOW!

Congrats! I think he did the right thing by releasing the fish as it shows a lot of character. I'll likely never be in a similar situation but I'd like to think I'd release it as well. It was measured and weight was on certified scales.

    Should have kept it.

No one is going to catch that fish ever again, and it already has spawned several times.

    Whack it and stack it.

Article says not weighed on certified scales, do can't be a state record. Too bad, releasing the fish was very classy. He knows he beat the record.

Idk if I could do that. I think I would rather see that fish die of natural causes and let nature take care of itself, but on the other hand it probably didn't have a ton of life left anyway as that was probably an old fish.

However, I hear it is recommended to do that with muskies over 50" or so. I hear they are good pickled or even deep fried!
