    Fishing and chemotherapy

I was recently diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. I had my first chemo treatments 9 days ago. The treatments are 2 days in a row and will last for 4-6 months. I’m still wiped out from round one. Is fishing a good idea? If I can get past the fatigue and nausea, it would be nice to do the thing I love. From Googling it, it seems that many say it isn’t worth the risk of infections (from small nicks and cuts) and lake water. Does anyone have any experience/advice they could share?

First my friend...prayers and strength for healing to you.

As stated, it is likely not worth the risk, be patient and find another pastime and hobby to keep yourself occupied during your healing process.

    Prayers for you.

My son went through cancer treatments in 2017-2018. There was no way that he could fish because of the nausea and diarrhea that he experienced from treatments. In fact there were weeks at a time that he would be too weak to get out of bed. The good news is that he has been cancer free for almost 6 years and goes fishing with me whenever he can.

Hang in there and fight with all you have.

Now is a good time to just work on your tackle and sort through all the gear you no longer use or need and put it up for sale. It's a good past time while you heal up and don't risk getting any infections by going to the lake until you are back on your feet 100% !!

Don’t go by yourself, take someone along. Have them handle the fish and assist you. If you feel up to it. I don’t see an issue with it. Just don’t over do it.

First, I hope the chemo will take care of the cancer. Prayers for an effective course of treatment. Second, I have never been through chemo but can imagine it is quite hard on the human body and immune system so with this being flu season, etc., I would recommend going for walks when you’re up to it to get fresh air and sunlight. At best, as has been mentioned already see if you can join someone and wet a line until you’re feeling 100%. The fish will be there when you’re fully recovered.

I haven't asked the doctor yet. I will on my next visit. The input from people who have some experience is very helpful also.

I want to tell you from experience I fished through my chemo and radiation. I felt terrible the whole time however i would I do it again. To explain I only fish no other hobbies. I have a close buddy that is only 50 to my 72 at that time. He knows my obsession with fishing and he has it as well. I had days of misery but I had days of pure joy as well. Like mentioned I had days of vomiting and diarrhea these were sort of the first weeks. My buddy knew these problems and well I love him like a son we just worked through it. Now I know some people will read this and say I'm nuts but my reply is life is short.
Waiting till the times are perfect, weather , health etc.may not come. The point to me is I would have been suffering the same way at home. I went to my oncologist last Thursday and he announced I am cancer free. Thanks be to God,Wife, my buddy Tom.
