    2005 HPDI

Looking at a Skeeter that has a 05 HPDI 225 on it. Are there any known issues with these motors? Common problems? I'm a Merc guy from way back and don't know a whole lot about Yamaha.

Mechanically a fairly sound motor. major problems occur when maintenance is not done in a timely manner. no less than 12 fuel filters, including onboard water separator. Lean out of engine will cause catastrophic failure. expectations of ultra high or rPM above 6000 should be forgotten. Being 20 year models old, There are additional issues with aged gaskets. All midsection and powerhead gaskets should be replaced.

if you arent willing to spend 500.00 a year on fuel system dont buy it been around them a long time seen may lose a cylinder because the fuel filters werent changed.

    Wow, $500. I don't think we have spent that on a 05 300 in it's lifetime! Cj

I don’t like the 3.3l. I walked away from good deals that had an hpdi on them.

I'm running a '05 3.3 300 hpdi on a bullet with a phase 2 kit. Flawless engine that makes a ton of power. I'm right at 1100 hrs, I'm sure it'll let go eventually. Do your maintenance and they are great.

If they are propped to high and lugged, poor fuel and as smithboats said filters are not changed including the hidden ones, you will have issues. If they are maintained correctly, good fuel and propped right they run great and for a long time. Cj

Yea, OK. I have probably changed more of the "hidden" "mystery" filters than most but can't see where someone would spend $500 on these filters in the life of the engine. They are what $2 each. Anyway Yea I have had countless cylinders fail on me, Oh, wait, no that would be zero. All of mine were propped correctly and serviced. So I am glad you were talking about me! CJ
