Trying to decide on a + or- $200 low line capacity reel for skipping docks and low hanging limbs.
Prefer Shimano or Daiwa.
Appreciate any recommendations.

JDM Daiwa Alphas SV TW 800S shallow spool. Select your gear ratio of choice.
If you are LH, here is a For Sale Listing:

There was also a Daiwa SS SV103 on the for sale forum, and it is an excellent skipping reel, very controlled.

Daiwa Tatula elite pitch and flip is great for skipping
Why spend extra for the shallow spool? The SV spool/braking from Daiwa could help if you aren't good at skipping but I've told many folks to just learn with what you have. No special rod or reel is needed unless you just want one.

Diawa SS Air skips baits w/o backlashes better than my Lews skipping reel, the Curado dc, and all others. Great senko reel.
Wound up buying a Daiwa Tatula SV 103 with 8.1 ratio. Was able to keep it within budget. Supposed to arrive by 12-17.
Thanks to everyone for their feedback. Some great ideas and I am looking forward to learning to skip accurately and take advantage of some opportunities I have been missing out on.

Congrats and enjoy.
Daiwa Tatula SV150 is tough to beat for skipping. Fishes every bit as good as my Daiwa Zillion G reels.
Im probably in the minority, but I hate the SV spools for skipping. Honestly, any $200 reel that feels good in your hand will work. One tip is to underfill the spool on a regular size spool, it will greatly help you with backlashes.
While a trained thumb can probably skip with any decent reel, the SV technology makes it just sooo much easier though to skip. Even the dc technology in the Shimano reels can't keep up here. And I have tried basically all of the dc reels.
While Shimano has the edge at casting distance, daiwa is the better choice for easy control IMHO.
This is what I use… and higher gear ratio to pick up line half way back to the boat quickly to re-cast.
Funny, I first purchased a Tatula SV approx 8-10 years ago or whenever they came out - because any other baitcast reel I would use would backlash on me. I’ve gotten pretty good at skipping since and do it for much of the year. Interesting, I recently went back to some of my other reels that I had previously struggled to skip with, and tried some other new ones too. You’d think after perfecting the art of skipping with the Tatula for several years would translate to proper technique with the other reels. Not the case… I’m better with other reels now than I was years ago, but probably batting .500 on a completely clean cast versus backlash.
Long and short, you made a good purchase!

The daiwa sv spool reels like the tatula are pretty nice for that. They don't cast very far, but they do keep your reel from blowing up too bad skipping jigs. For short range roll casts like you are looking at, you picked a fine reel.
Great advice and information from some excellent fishermen in this thread ( talking about Mark...along with others ).
One thing I picked up on is not using to much line for short casts. I can see where excess line could make for some nasty backlashes.
I use mostly Shimano reels but have added several Daiwa reels after Mark recommended them mostly Tatulas,. Also a Zillion which is excellent.

You should get on the Tube and watch Swindle's videos on skipping. Never seen anyone else anywhere near that good. No one.
He is absolutely right - "Years of excessive practice."
No short cuts. You can squander all the money you want, but only practice works. I thought I was pretty good until I watched Crazy Gerald.
You can skip well with reel of reasonable quality. I'm using some cheap ($25 on sale) KastKing reels I found on Amazon. Skips as good as my high dollar Lews. Probably won't last as long.
