I’ve been retired for 20 years, but I don’t think you should ever be completely out.

depending on the size of one's portfolio, maybe someone should be 100% in the market at all times. Another smaller portfolio maybe can't take the risk and produce the monthly income needed.

The notion that you just pull your money when you retire is silly. People who think that way need a financial advisor who has a clue. I'm sure many don't have a clue but you need a good one.

Or adopt a hedged portfolio. You can buy a buffer ETF that minimizes your loss to the downside of 2% while giving you an upside potential of 9%. It doesn't always have to be long only and with options you can define the risk and outcomes.

I might have something like you describe Nitro now. Let me share and see if it is the same concept. I have an annity fund based on index funds. I have one for S&P500 and one for Russell 2000. For the Russell based annuity, it can double or go up 100% in three years, if the market tanks the first 10% of my loss is covered and the rest is on me. The gain cap on the S&P500 based contract I have is 85% but still an 85% gain in three years I'd take and run.

We picked these up for a portion of my IRA last October and this was my first exposure as to how smaller investors can particpate in such things.
