I know the parable was using money, but I think it is just as applicable to the other resources we have, e.g. our personal talents.

I agree with BFL that the parable of the talents can be applied in different aspects of our lives with respect on our relations with GOD, Christ and life situations in our human lives.
I have applied this parable on my own children, though I strongly believe that I am the cause for some of their failures for not applying tough love when it was needed. Yes, some times not allowing our children to fail or fall can create weaknesses in them establishing life long issues that undermine the great gifts God created in them.
