Serial number 1B434184. Any idea what would cause the coil to burn up like this? I've had coils go bad before but not like this. Also melted the lead connection.
I've replaced the coil but wasn't sure the best way to replace the lead. Can I splice the new lead into the wires for the old lead, or do I need to unwrap all the electrical tape from the main wiring harness and find where these lead wires are attached? Thx.
Windings within the coil can short to each other resulting in excessive current flow. The extra current flow can result in excessive temperatures. Resulting in melting insulation, burning and/or flames.
Use only an OEM coil to replace that one, and use the latest number. Service Bulletin recommendations are to replace all three, though replacing the melted one will resolve the immediate failure.
Pigtail replacements are available from Mercury Dealers- they splice into the existing wiring, between the convoluted sheath and the plug. Heat-shrink type butt splice connectors are provided.
