    popping lure wars

Last December I posted I needed replacements for my zell pop x-calibur lures which are no longer produced. You informed me that Booyah bought the mold; Thank YOU. many also posted I should try the Rico Rio and Yellow magic. So in BBC fashion, I bought all of them. I'm in south Florida now and most of my neighbors think fishing is terrible. I'm on a topwater bite that I think relates to sight fishing more then active fish. I have fished all three lures an wanted to share the outcome.

The Booyah is killing it. In 4 days of fishing, I have 5 fish longer then 25 inches and 10 longer then 22. The Booyah makes a true popping sound with a bit of walk.

The yellow magic is a joy to fish. It walks more like a lucky craft sammy with only modest pop. I had about 20 small in 60 minutes Sunday just before sun-up. You could see the fish coming out from under the matts to track it down. The sound I think is what was causing it. But no big fish. Not sure what hooks are on this lure but scary sharp. Beware

The Rico has stumped me. I have bone and tennesse shad. Neither has produced a single fish. I'm stumped because this is the BBC favorite. Walk wise it casts and pops similar to the Booyah but the fish have spoken; or not. Yesterday was a slow day and I only had 4 fish and I tried this lure quite a bit to see if it could work in tough conditions. No was the answer.

I think any popping bait will work when fish are busting shad. That is not my conditions. My experience this week may indicate color is important and that cost is not.

p.s. Does anything beat seeing a 7lb bass inhale a topwater???

Is the Rico the 1/4 oz model? I don’t care for the Rio Rico size.

Try tying onto the Rico below the mid point of the lure eye. IMHO tying onto the rico like that makes it spit….but not pop. I find it to be a much more effective bait when it spits.

no, it is the bigger one. Too much wind in south florida for athe 1/4oz. I might not have it on my best walking rod but I'm stumped by lack of a single strike.

ceraintly not Ohio! Yes, florida large mouth. A 25 inch fish down here is approximatly 6#. That fish in Ohio is at least a pound more.

Rico is by far my favorite. I don't think I have any of the booyahs. Might have to give those a try.

I had a pre-Rapala matte gold chugbug that I never used and ended up placing it in our 4th of July family auction. I didn’t realize they were so good or desirable until afterwards

I have plenty of Zell Pops left. Consider this, you can’t catch bass on the brand you are not throwing. I get that they all have subtle differences, but if “I caught a bunch on brand X”. You might, or not, have caught a bunch on brand Y.

The new Shimano world pop is a good one to add. Little pricey but it catches fish
