Does Anyone Still Fish A Johnson's Silver Minnow Spon?

I'm a Gen Xer so I can remember this lures heyday. I think they still sell them, and I think I have a few of them somewhere, but haven't thought about using one for years. I think I'm going to make a goal of catching 10 bass on them this year if I can find my stash of them. I thought a plastic twister tail made for a great trailer on them, but I don't recall catching very many fish on them.

Do any of you guys use them?

I know I have a few of them. But even before my health took me out of fishing, it had been a good while I went without using one.

I bought one a couple years ago, only threw it briefly a couple times. I added a rubber skirt on mine, which looks good to my eye. I like your goal, I should do the same and build some confidence in it. I’m sure it’s something the bass don’t see often, if ever, so could be great on pressures lakes.

The silver minnow was the 1st bass lure I used when I was a kid, with a Uncle Josh pork frog

Yes but only when I’m out on “The Gulf Of America” hunting redfish! The reds on the west side of Florida love them!

I don't use one but, my partner won a tournament with one. We were fishing in a non-team tournament, every man for himself. I was kinda a newbie, at the end of the day I had one fish he had 4. I got a strike but missed it in a clump of floating grass. We had 10 minutes left, i told him about the strike. I figured, what the heck, 2 fish wouldn't win. He ran a Silver Minnow through the grass and caught his limit, and won the tournament. It was one of those days when nobody caught many fish, some of the other competitors were skeptical about me with 1, him with 5, but it was legal.

Haven't used one in years but once upon a time we caught bass fishing them with an Uncle Josh pork eel over grass or in the pads.

I have a bunch, work great in Northern waters of Michigan for many species. Tip with a minnow, some type of Mr. Twister grub, or trailer of choice. Troll out the back of the boat and just wait for the bite to happen. I've never really casted them for bass, might have to try that this year.

Yep, and a Millers Wobbler and a Daredevle. The smaller versions are great baits for white bass.

I've used them for striped bass, but I've never caught a Bass on them.

A gold one for red fish in shallow water is the first lure I throw.

I used to use them in ponds with a u2 trailer as the ice would go off. Lot of time would throw up on the ice, and then let it flutter down into open water. Was a great way to catch fish. I also used to use them in slop setup with a trailer spiked onto the weed guard and then hook so it was weedless.

I made an effort to use one last year. Really good lure for fishing slop.

Yes, sometimes in thick weeds or pads with a short plastic twister or a 4" ringworm for a trailer. It is a more subtle bait that will come through any type of cover and produces when they won't hit a spinnerbait or chatterbait.
